In this edition of our Employee Spotlight, we are excited to feature Balvinder “Bob” Chahal, Head of AI Engineering and Strategy
Could you share some insights into your background and how you came to join GCX?
My professional journey began in Electronics Engineering, but my passion for technology quickly led me to transition into IBM Mainframe operations and early network technologies. By 1988, I was implementing some of the earliest WAN and LAN environments. Over the years, I’ve worn many technical hats—Unix Administrator, Firewall Security Specialist, and TCP/IP Networking Specialist—each shaping my understanding of complex systems and networks.
I joined the company in 2002 in its Vanco days, well before it evolved into GCX, and I’ve been with the organization ever since. It’s been a front-row seat to the evolution of our industry—from analogue circuits and TDMs to the era of SD-WAN and GNSX (Palo Alto Networks Prisma Access). Being part of this transformation has been both professionally rewarding and personally fascinating.
What motivates you in your role at GCX, and how do you maintain your inspiration?
At the core, I’m driven by the technology itself. My role as a technical leader allows me to dive deep—not just understanding technologies on the surface but exploring them in depth. I’m not someone who settles for buzzwords or fleeting trends; I’m energized by understanding how things truly work.
My inspiration comes from a constant desire to learn and evolve. Even after all these years, I’m just as curious about emerging technologies (like Artificial Intelligence) as I was when I started. GCX has given me the platform to satisfy that curiosity and apply it in meaningful ways.
Is there a specific project or achievement at GCX that you are particularly proud of?
There have been several projects that stand out—Backbone Network Design, the MPLS Matrix, and significant implementations for customers like Lloyds, Ernst & Young, Hilton, Specsavers, and most recently the GNSX SASE Network.
But if I had to choose one thing I’m most proud of, it would be mentoring young professionals. Watching junior engineers and technicians grow into confident, capable experts is incredibly rewarding. It’s a privilege to play a role in shaping the next generation of technical leaders.
How do you approach challenges and overcome obstacles in your work?
I believe in facing challenges head-on. The first step is to listen—really listen—to understand the root of the issue. Then, I focus on clear, consistent communication to ensure we’re aligned on the solution.
There’s no shortcut around obstacles, but I’ve found that a proactive mindset combined with open dialogue can resolve even the most complex issues. Staying calm (or at least trying to!), methodical, and transparent is key.
What role do your colleagues and team members play in your success at GCX?
Success is never a solo endeavour. I firmly believe that a team is only as strong as its weakest link. That’s why I prioritize collaboration, skill development, and mutual support.
I’ve had the good fortune to work with some incredibly talented and inspiring colleagues—Ziad Dar, James Rose, Eric Nesman and Amish Shah among them. They’ve not only contributed to our shared success but have also encouraged me to stay authentic and embrace bold ideas, even when they seem a little unconventional.
Are there any mentors or individuals who have had a significant impact on your career here?
Absolutely. The colleagues I mentioned earlier have provided more than just professional support—they’ve been sounding boards, collaborators, and friends. There’s often a “method in the madness” to solving problems, and having people around you who understand that rhythm is invaluable.
How has your role evolved since joining GCX, and how have you grown as a professional?
I started as a Network Support Manager and have since progressed through roles including TDA, Head TDA, and now Head of AI Engineering and Strategy. Each transition brought new responsibilities, challenges, and learning opportunities.
GCX has always encouraged me to explore beyond the confines of a job title. That openness has allowed me to grow in both technical and strategic dimensions, especially as we move into exciting areas like AI integration and next-gen network solutions.
What advice would you offer to new employees or those striving to excel in their careers at GCX?
Be curious. Go deeper than the buzzwords. Understand the ‘why’ behind the technology you’re working with.
Also, don’t underestimate the power of teamwork. Share your knowledge, listen to others, and be generous with your time when someone needs help. In the end, it’s not just about what you know—it’s about how you bring people together to solve problems and drive progress.
GCX is a place where you can truly grow if you’re willing to embrace both the complexity and the community.
