One Year On: Growth, Grit, and Gratitude – Reflections from Our Graduates

The first year after graduation is often a whirlwind of discovery, a balance between learning and doing, between questions and confidence. For GCX graduates Shinjani Mishra and Siddhesh Upadhyay, this first year has been just that: a journey of transformation, collaboration, and self-belief. As part of our feature entitled “One Year On”, they share their reflections on stepping into the professional world, navigating challenges, and the lessons that have shaped their careers so far.

A Year of Learning and Transformation

Both Shinjani and Siddhesh describe their first year as a period of immense learning and personal growth. Transitioning from academic theory to real-world application was exhilarating and, at times, daunting, but above all, rewarding.

“My first year has been an incredible journey, full of learning, challenges, and growth,” says Shinjani. “Transitioning from a graduate trainee to an active part of the Network Security team has given me a strong foundation, both technically and professionally.”

Siddhesh echoes this sentiment:

“Embarking on my career immediately after graduation was both exhilarating and slightly intimidating. However, the experience has been immensely rewarding.”

For both, the year has been defined by hands-on experience, practical problem-solving, and the realization that real-world learning happens best when curiosity leads the way.

Lessons in Curiosity, Collaboration, and Courage

Adaptability and curiosity emerged as defining themes for both graduates. They learned that growth happens when you step outside your comfort zone, ask questions, and embrace feedback.

“The biggest lesson I’ve learned is that asking questions is essential, especially in a field that evolves as rapidly as network security,” says Shinjani. “Our work is just as much about people and collaboration as it is about technology.”

Siddhesh adds:

“This year has underscored the importance of adaptability, curiosity, and collaboration. Stepping outside of one’s comfort zone and being receptive to feedback are key drivers of growth.”

Both emphasize that success in technology is not just about mastering systems but also about understanding people, learning continuously, and taking ownership of one’s development.

Moments of Pride and Milestones Achieved

The first year also brought plenty to celebrate. Both graduates achieved their CCNA certifications, a significant milestone validating their technical skills.

“Successfully completing my graduate program and transitioning into the role of Associate – Network Security was a major step forward,” says Shinjani. “Earning my CCNA certification and contributing to the security audit were moments that reinforced my technical foundation.”

Siddhesh shares similar pride in his accomplishments:

“Among many memorable milestones, I’m most proud of investigating network incidents, identifying root causes, and proposing effective solutions,” he says. “Training with CATO, Palo Alto, and FortiGate significantly enhanced my technical expertise.”

These achievements, they agree, are not just professional highlights but reminders of how far consistent effort and curiosity can take you.

The Power of Mentorship and Team Spirit

Both graduates speak warmly about the supportive culture at GCX and the people who helped shape their journey. Their stories highlight the strength of teamwork and the value of having mentors who encourage growth.

“My team created an environment where I felt comfortable learning, asking questions, and even making mistakes,” says Shinjani. “The daily guidance from my colleagues turned every challenge into a learning opportunity.”

Siddhesh agrees:

“I’ve been fortunate to work alongside supportive mentors, teammates, and leaders who have consistently encouraged me to push my boundaries,” he reflects. “Their guidance has helped me develop both technically and personally.”

Their shared appreciation for the GCX culture reflects a workplace that empowers young professionals to learn, grow, and contribute meaningfully.

Advice for the Next Generation

When asked what advice they’d give to this year’s new graduates, both offer a blend of humility, optimism, and encouragement.

“Be curious, and don’t be afraid to ask questions, it’s the best way to learn,” advises Shinjani. “Build relationships across the organization and remember that mistakes are simply opportunities to improve.”

Siddhesh adds:

“Stay curious, remain humble, and embrace every opportunity to learn. It’s perfectly normal to not have all the answers, what matters most is the willingness to ask questions and grow.”

Their advice to new joiners captures the heart of the GCX graduate experience, a culture rooted in curiosity, collaboration, and continuous improvement.

Looking Ahead

As they step confidently into the next phase of their careers, both graduates embody the GCX spirit, inquisitive, collaborative, and committed to progress. Their first year has not only strengthened their technical foundations but also shaped their sense of purpose within the GCX community.Their message to future graduates is simple but powerful: ask questions, stay curious, and trust the journey.
