Could you share some insights into your background and how you came to join GCX?
I’ve been very fortunate throughout my career to work across varied industries, from the motor trade and hardware LAN networking to radio frequency, before joining the telecommunications industry. My roles have varied across finance, stock management, maintenance contract management, internal account management, and procurement. Each role provided unique opportunities to grow and develop knowledge across different areas of the business, creating strong building blocks and transferable skills throughout my career journey. I was attracted to GCX because of its impressive global presence, comprehensive subsea cable network, and the opportunities this presented.
What motivates you in your role at GCX, and how do you maintain your inspiration?
I stay motivated by the regular opportunities to solve complex design challenges for our customers. I thrive on building new vendor relationships while continuing to maintain positive relationships with existing vendors. I also value the opportunity to develop the procurement team, sharing knowledge and experience to support their growth and drive best practice that aligns with company values. Is there a specific project or achievement at GCX that you are particularly proud of?
There have been multiple projects I’ve been proud to be part of during my time with GCX, from working with our sales and technical consultants to understand requirements and source the right solution first time against tight budgets for complex, diverse networks. This has included using best-in-market vendors to connect with our subsea cable network for a global e-commerce organisation, as well as supporting a large-scale global network rollout from Quoting through to delivery. Working closely with multiple global vendors on technical design, costs, and efficient delivery timelines has helped drive the success of these projects.
How do you approach challenges and overcome obstacles in your work?
I approach challenges as an opportunity to grow, learn, and improve. I tend to adopt a systematic approach: first, understand the challenge; then identify what the ideal solution should look like; and finally determine the best execution. This may involve collaboration with multiple stakeholders, and I believe it’s important to stay flexible throughout the process to ensure the best outcomes.
What role do your colleagues and team members play in your success at GCX?
I firmly believe my colleagues and team members play a vital role in my success at GCX. I’m fortunate to work with a diverse team of people, many of whom I’m fortunate to call friends as well as colleagues. They bring expertise and knowledge, and they are always willing to give their time and support, which gives me opportunities to learn and grow in an ever-evolving industry.
Are there any mentors or individuals who have had a significant impact on your career here?
I’ve been very fortunate to work with some great individuals, particularly Jonathan Wright and Meenesh Patel during my telecommunications journey. They share their expertise, encourage individuals to grow and develop, and support others in being successful.
How has your role evolved since joining GCX, and how have you grown as a professional?
My role has evolved from focusing on the procurement of European solutions to leading the Global Procurement Team and supporting the team in its success and development. This has included identifying and establishing new strategic partnerships with global vendors to enhance our supply chain and expand our market reach, as well as collaborating on the development of new tools to drive efficiencies. Having the opportunity to work globally has increased my knowledge and expertise in regions where I previously had limited exposure.
What advice would you offer to new employees or those striving to excel in their careers at GCX?
Build positive relationships with cross-functional teams. Our industry is ever-evolving, so it is important to be agile and adaptable. Adopting an open mind, being willing to collaborate with colleagues, and learning from their expertise will help drive your opportunities and success.
